Speed issues when using Source Safe 2005

Hi,

Our VSS database is on a shared folder on a server in the office.
On 4 machines we can connect to the database without any problems.
But on a 5th machine the Source Safe client is practically unusable due to the speed at which it performs (it took over 10 hours to get the latest versions of about 2000 files).
It's Vista Business 32 bit machine and it has no problems connecting to the shared folder via Windows Explorer.
I figure there must be something simple preventing it from working properly.
Can anyone suggest where I might begin looking?

Thanks,

David

Hi David,

I don't have this problem on my 32-bit Vista machine.  Is there any antivirus or firewall installed on your machine? you could try to stop them to see if VSS is still slow in checking out.

Sincerely,
Wesley

Hi Wesley,

Thanks for the response.

I've disabled the antivirus and firewall programs on the machine in question but it doesn't seem to have made any difference.

I'm really at a loss here - it probably isn't a problem with permissions or anything like that because it can get the files and I don't think it's a network related issue because it can access/copy files to the same server at a reasonable speed.

I should also point out that the 4 machines on which SourceSafe is functional are Vista 32 bit machines. Is it possible that there are settings that are enabled on those machines but not on the problematic one?

Is there anything else you can suggest?

Thanks,

David

Hi David,

Have you tried to re-install the VSS? and please back up the database before doing.

Sincerely,
Wesley

Hi David,

Is your 5th machine located in the same LAN with the server?

Hi Catherine,

All of the machines are on the same LAN. I'm currently doing a reinstall of the source safe client so hopefully I'll be able to post some new information later in the day.

Thanks,

David
