Initializing Offline Cache while opening web application in Visual Studio 2003

I am trying to open up a web application from source control (Visual Source Safe 6.0) using Visual Studio .NET 2003 IDE and the IDE hangs up/freezes with a status message as "Initializing Offline Cache" when loading projects in the solution.

I have tried all these things to see ifthe problem is fixed:
1) Cleared cache at C:\Documents and Setting\Username\VSWebCache
2) Create a USERPostMessageLimit DWORD in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windowswith a value of 15000 (i think maximum is 18000) and rebooted.
3) re-installed Visual Studio 2003

None of the above fixed my problem.

Any help in this regard would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Wesley,

I had proper binding information but i think running PVCS and VSS side by side might have messed up my registry settings and caused all the issues. I tried re-installing Visual Source Safe 2005 and then tried opening my web application from source control. It worked just fine this time.

Thanks for allyour help.

Hi,

Please try the following way. Hope it helps.

1. Go to My Computer > Drive (right click) > properties > security > remove user name from list > apply

2. assign again back to it.
Goto My Computer > drive (right click)>properties >security > add user name again back to it

Hello,

What if you create the web project not from source control? does the IDE still hands up? you could try to disable the anti-virus or firewall on your machine if they are installed, and the FileMon or ProcMon would be helpful to track what are the IDE doing.

Sincerely,
Wesley

Hello Wesley,

First of all thanks for replying. I tried creating a new Web Project with out source control and it went on fine. The only time i have issues is when opening web project from source control. I also used ProcMon.exe to track down IDE activity and i noticed that there are NAME INVALID errors for allmy web projects like:

ProcessName: devenv.exe
Operation: CreateFile
Path: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003\Common7\IDE\http:\localhost\projectX
Result: NAME INVALID

Do you have anyidea what that means?

Thanks in advance.

Hi DK,

It seems your VSS provider is reading bindings by another provider, the different format cause this error. Could you please check if the web project is binded to other providers? then change it bind to VSS provider.

Sincerely,
Wesley
