Error: Cannot contact the Visual SourceSafe, Unspecified error (0x80004005)

I was having no issues for months and suddenly I get this error about 90% of the time that I try to check in or out a file or add a project:

Cannot contact the Visual SourceSafe Internet Web Service or cannot access the specified database.
The server returned the following error: Unspecified error (0x80004005)

I'm using Visual SourceSafe 2005 and SQL Server Business Intelligence Studio 2008 / Visual Studio 2008. It's only happening with one of the two projects we have set up this way. I'm running Windows XP.

When I open the project from VSS, it prompts for a password and loads the project. I just can't check in or out. Also, I'm able to access http://ipaddress/SourceSafe/VssService.asmxwith no issues.

Plug-in is Microsoft Visual SourceSafe (Internet). We do not use SSL to connect.

Again, this is happening about 90% of the time. 10% of the time is business as usual. The two other people who access this project arein another office in a different city and don't have this problem, though I access this project more than they do. I'm not sure if it's my computer or the network or what. I went for months not getting this error and now it's been happening intermittentlyfor the last 3 weeks. Nothing has changed as far as we can recall.

Hello,

You could take a look at the IIS log, and use Fiddlerto monitor the network traffic in InternetExplorer and Visual Studio, the error code may point out the problem.
By the way, have you followed all the permission rules as Alin's post?--http://alinconstantin.homeip.net/WebDocs/SCC/VSS_Internet.htm

Hi,

It seems a network issue. Please make sure that your network is stable.

How? Can you please elaborate? The other project we have set up the same way consistently works, but I'll try anything.
