I'm completely new to VSS but what I would try to do is to connect to the database that we have at our web site provider. I would like to have all files stored online. How can we achieve that? How can I connect to an online database and what specs does the database need to have?

Would you please be more specific about "connect to an online database"? Are you searching for an online source control tool?

Using VSS, all files/projects you added into VSSare stored in VSS database.
