VS 2008 Pro won't install, runs svchost @ 50%, PC won't re-boot, DVD won't eject

Environment: XP Pro SP3, 3GB, everything up-to-date

I just bought VS 2008 Pro and I've been struggling all afternoon with it. At this point I am disabling AVG Resident Shield and killing Sonic Drag-to-disc. When I insert the DVD basically nothing happens -- some clicks and a "DVD mouse cursor" but no dialogs whatsoever. CPU utilization goes to 50% with the culprit being svchost. If I open Windows Explorer and click on the DVD drive Windows Explorer locks up. I've got a built-in DVD and also a portable USB DVD reader and I've tried with both -- exactly the same behavior. Oh, also, the DVD will not eject. I have to re-boot to be able to eject the DVD. To re-boot, I must power-off the PC -- normal Restart hangs fairly early in the shutdown process.

It's been a frustrating afternoon. Any suggestions?

Okay. Got it installed. Never solved the "DVD loop" problem described above. Mounted the DVD on a different PC, copied it to disk, and did the install over the network. I've got a problem now with VS itself, but I'm going to search the forums and then if necessary start a new thread.
