Hi,

I'm also having a problem with VS2008 in XP pro in that it fails to create a new Setup project. I get an error message that says:

Unable to open project 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9\Common7\Tools\Deployment\VsdProjects\Setup.vdproj'.

The vdproj file is definitely there and able to be opened in a text editor. I've also re-run VS setup to 'fix' my installation, still the same error message.

I saw a post in another forum where someone had cleared this by upgrading to Vista... is there any other way to get beyond this and create a setup project?

OK, finally it seemed there was no other option but to rip it all out and start again. 'Re-installing/repair' did not fix the problem. So a full uninstall, a manual trawl through the registry deleting all VisualStuio keys. Restarting PC. Re-intalling, patching to Sp1.... now I can create a Setup project. Nice :)

Some clarification with you:
Can you open Setup.vdproj manually in Visual Studio?

Please try upgrading Visual Studio 2008 to SP1. Does it work?

If no avail, could you please try the points mentioned here: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vssetup/thread/0376db8f-4761-4ae5-9af2-98c53216318a#VS_IDE_unexpected_problemsto eliminate the possible cause?

and also sorry for the delay, been out of office and unable to check out the suggestions...

OK, today I tried all the suggestions from the VS_IDE_unexpected_problems article. None of these helped.

I've also run Windows update and picked up all the latest for VS 2008. No change.

One new thing that I have tried is this. VS 2008 is also installed on my laptop, on there I WAS able to create and build a setup project. Today I transfered that successfully building project on to my desktop, and it still fails to open the project! "Unable to open project c:\Temp\Setup1.vdproj". This is also the same message I get when trying to open Setup.vdproj manually.

I suspect that your issue could be related to corrupted Visual Studio installation. Could you please try reinstalling it?

I have previously re-installed VS. I think originally Setup project was not installed, but was subsequently. Now that I've updated to Sp1 I don's see Setup included on the Add/Remove program features list.
