Visual Studio 2008 Team System Release repeatedly crashes on Vista Enterprise

I just installed VS 2008 on Vista Enterprise, and the IDE crashes if I move a docked window "Help Contents", or set options from the menu. IDE crashes on pretty much any action, with no project open. A dialog appears with "Visual C# Intellisense has stopped working" and two buttons. The Debug button launches another instance of VS 2008, which also crashes. I tried repairing the installation, with no change in the behavior.

For what it's worth, the VS 2008 install failed until Aaron Stebner helped me with the .NET 2.0 installpath registry setting, which had been missing. After making the change VS 2008 installed fine, but now will not run without crashing.

What do I need to do to stop Intellisense from crashing the IDE?

In fact, there can be many reasons for IDE crash.

Typically, it needs memory dump to deal with such cases.

However, you could trythe following steps to see if the problem persists:

  • Reboot the machine into Safe Mode. Do we still have the problem? This can isolate some third party application/driver’s interference.
  • If we switch to try a new user account, do we have the problem? This can rule out the possibility of corrupted user profile.
  • Try to run VS by devenv /SafeMode

Thanks

Thanks, Figo, I ended up reinstalling Vista Enterprise and Visual Studio 2008. The VS 2008 IDE no longer crashes.
