I am trying to Install Visual Studio 2008, but the installation keeps failing.

I have VS2005 installed already.

I uninstalled all the software it said to remove before installing and I've disabled antivirus software.

The installer fails when it gets up to installing Visual Studio 2008. setup.exe has an error.

Can someone please help me. (I'm using XP)

Don't go crazy uninstalling all the software’s you have, because it’s not going to help.

I am stuck with the same problem for several weeks and I tried everything I could do, nothing worked.

I had no issues when I installed VS 2003 or 2005, this is the first time I am seeing all these ***.

I think the install kit was not fully tested prior to releasing.

When I ran \WCU\dotNetFramework\dotNetFx35setup.exe, it popped up a black command cmd console, but quickly dissapeared. That is all that happened. 1. Version of .NET Framework you are trying to install. 3.5 (Or the one that comes with Visual Studio 2008)
   
2. Where did you get it (web page, path, application that redistributed the framework) Came with Visual Studio 2008
   
3. Is this a pre-release, CTPor beta version? Which? (Beta#, CTP (Month Year), RC, etc) Its not beta or pre-release
   
4. What .NET Framework Patches do you currently have installed?: Listed below
   
   1. .NET Compact Framework 1.0 SP3 Developed
   2. .NET Framework 2.0 SP1
   3. .NET Framework 3.0 SP1
   4. .NET Framework 3.5

During set up it crashed setup.exe, returning this message: "Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition - ENU has encountered a problem during setup. Setup did not complete correctly."

Also when I run \WCU\WebDesignerCore\WebDesignerCore.EXE it pops up a black command cmd console, but quickly dissapears. When I run the setup wizard, it also does the same when it comes to this component.

What can I do to get VS2008 installed? Thank you.

Also, I'm not sure if it matters but I also have Office 2007 installed.

I had a similar problem when installing VS2008: .NET Framework installation failed then VS2008 installation stops.
I tried several solutions but the only one which succeed is to remove all the .NET Framework then re-install all .NET Framework (I install in this order: 1, 1.1, 2, 3.0, 3.5)
Maybe there is a more easy solution but this one works for me.

So first please use .NET Framework 3.5 Installation validation tool: http://blogs.msdn.com/aaronru/archive/2007/11/29/net-framework-3-5-installation-validation-tool.aspxto see if your .NET 3.5has beeninstalled properly.

Then use the collect tool from here: http://astebner.sts.winisp.net/Tools/Collect.zip to collect the log information.

It is a Win32 console application, so you can extract it from the zip file and double-click on it to run it. It will create a file named %temp%\vslogs.cab on your system after it has gathered all of the log files.
Note - after the tool finishes running, you can get to your %temp% folder to find the file vslogs.cab by clicking on the Start menu, choosing Run, typing %temp% and clicking OK.
(while running the collect tool, it may take some time to collect log files on your machine, please be patient..)

Neither of those programs run. They just open the black command box then exit straight away. (except for collect.exe) which just sits there saying "Collecting machine MSI Inventory", i left it for over an hour and it didn't do anything.

Anyway, I ran a separate .net 3.5 think, the full redistributable package one from here, http://download.microsoft.com/download/6/0/f/60fc5854-3cb8-4892-b6db-bd4f42510f28/dotnetfx35.exe

but now when i ran the VS2008 setup i get the same error, but this time with Web Authoring Component.

I have a similar problem.

I installed VS 2008 (90 day trial edition) on XP SP2 and it was great.

On upgrading to SP3 it still ran and I used it until the end of the trial.

However now the trial has ended and I want to uninstall it - but the setup fails everytime.

So it’s stuck on my machine!

Previously I had successfully installed and uninstalled VS 2008 on SP2 with no problems several times.

My conclusion is that XP SP3 is not totally compatible with the Visual Studio 2008 Installer....fact.
