Not able to install Visual Studio 6.0 sp6 on win xp with sp2 System

Dear Team,

I was trying to install Visual Studio 6.0 on windows xp service pack 2 during installation it gives some warning messages.Below are the error messages

1 The new VSS DB Format offers faster performance and label promotion. It is recommended for new databases. When upgrading choose yes if all clients have v6 software other wise choose No to support both V5 and V6 clients with the old db Format

I clicked on NO Tab

2 The visual studio 6.0 Enterprise edition setup failed. Please try re-running the installation wizard

I Clicked on OK Tab and the software was working fine . But when i try to install Visual Studio SP6 on same system it was giving me error message "Visual Studio 6.0 service pack 6 setup was not completed successfully.Below softwares are installed on same machine

1 Windows xp with sp2
2 Acrobat Reader
3 open office
4 Microsoft .NET Frame work 2.0 and 3.5
5 MCafee Antivirus

Even when i try to uninstall the visual studio 6.0 but it gives me error message "Setup is unable to open data file c:\program files\microsoft visual studio\common\setup\1033\setup.stf run setup again from where you originally ran it" .

Same software with SP6 i installed on different machine (Windows xp with sp2) and it worked fine and also uninstallation was successful without any error. I have not installed any other software on this machine.

Hello,

Many times after a failed installation, it is important to "clean up" registry entries and files before attempting another installation. It is recommended that you follow the steps in this article in the order listed to prepare your machine for a clean installation of Visual Studio 6.0.

Do remember to disable your Anti Virus software while installing. Here is another article describes Visual Studio Installation Tips.

Hello,

Has any message shown while you are not able to remove vs6.0?

Any third party plugins, objects, controls, service-packs, or projects related to Visual Studio applications should be backed up or uninstalled before.

There have been some cases where multiple installation attempts were not successful while anti-virus products were installed. After a successful installation of Visual Studio components and re-install of the anti-virus application, the products co-existed without complications. You'll have to make that decision for your own machine, but definitely close all anti-virus related applications prior to proceeding.

Hello,

These types of troubles are mainly due to problems with the Windows Installer database, which might get damaged due to registry corruption.

In such a scenario, you will not be allowed to reinstall or uninstall the affected applications.

There is a tool known as "Installer Cleanup Utility" which is typically meant for situations like this.

You can download it from http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;290301

Please install and start the tool. You will get a list of all the applications installed using Windows Installer.

Using this tool you can select the problem-causing applications and remove them.

Removing these applications from this tool will remove all the entries related to the selected applications from the registry so that you can reinstall the application again.

When reinstalling, you need to reinstall the application into the same directory path as it was installed before.

In your case you will have to first remove Visual Studio using the tool and then try reinstalling.
