Cannot Download WebDesignerCore.exe during installation of Visual Web Developer Express 2008

I have been trying to download Visual Web developer Express 2008 for 3 days. The installation program always gets stuck when attempting to download Microsoft Visual Studio Web Authoring Component. It just gives out messages about trying to re-establish a connection with the server and then gives up.
As an alternative I tried using the Microsoft Web Platform Installer - and managed to get all the different components installed - except Visual Web Developer Express 2008.

I looked through the log files and found things seemed to be going wrong when downloading the file WebDesignerCore. The logs also gave a URL for this file (which redirects you to here: http://download.microsoft.com/download/8/D/7/8D70E348-C9C7-4567-BCBD-ACD29784F30B/WebDesignerCore.EXE) so I started trying to download this file manually using Firefox and DownThemAll.

The results of a lot of attempts of manual downloading are that: the download tends to start off quite quickly for the first 80% of the download but the downloads keep stalling and I just seem to get stuck at 98% or 99% of the download (and it seems always to be a section towards the beginning of the file that is missing).

What is wrong with Microsoft server? Can a mod on this forum get something done about this.

Hi Annie63,

Thank you for your post.

I've tried downloading this WebDesignerCore.EXE file from the link that you posted. It can be downloaded successfully.

Could you please try the following tricks:

- Make sure your internet proxy settings are configured correctly
- Try disabling any antivirus/internet security software while you try to register.
- Try resetting all the IE security settings to default (even if it's not your default browser).

If it doesn't work, as a try can you download the ISO installer of Visual Studio 2008 Express Editions, we can get it from http://www.microsoft.com/exPress/download/. (Please check "Offline Install".)

After downloading ISO, please go to ....VWDExpress\WCU\WebDesignerCore folder in the installation media. Then we will find this installer.

Hope this helps. If you have any concern, please feel free to let me know.

Best regards,
Yichun Chen

YiChen,

Thank you for your reply. I hadn't noticed the link to the download ISO option hidden at the bottom of the page. I did eventually manage to install Visual Web Designer using the normal download method but it involved a lot manual downloading.

If I need to do the installation again I will use the ISO next time

Annie
