Hi folks,

I'm not able to get GAX running on Visual Studio 2008. I installed GAX serveral times on virtual machines with fresh win xp and VS2008 installations (both english & german windows). When I am trying to install a Guidance Package the installer states :
"Visual Studio is not installed. Do you want to see information of the product? Click Yes to be directed to a web page, click No to exit."

And when I'm installing the GAT there isn't any option to create a GuidancePackage at all..

I'm having a similar experience. I'm curious which version of Visual Studio 2008 are you running? I'm running Team System for Architects. I'm thinking to try uninstalling team system and then installing Professional, but I'm concerned that the uninstall may leave things in an indeterminate state.

The issue is when you tried to install GAT or any other packages? That message "Visual Studio is not installed." is not from GAT so, I think that you're trying to install a GP which was not made for Orcas.

If you're running Vs 2005 and 2008 side by side, note that when you install GAX the setup ask you in which hive you want to install them, so if you've installed in 2005 you won't have GAX/GAT in 2008.

I am having the same problem on a newly built machine running windows XP SP2 Visual Studio 2008 Team system for Developers and SQL Server 2005. I have not installed Visual Studio 2005 but a shell was installed when I installed SQL Server 2005. Any thoughts. I have run the GAXPatch but still do not see the Guidance Manager on the tools menu

Not to the bad news ;-)
I downloaded the GAXTroubleshooter - but unfortunately it won't start on my "real" windows and "virtual" windows either.

It just crashes with following message:

I have .NET 3.5, VS2008 Professional Edition, GAX & GAT (not working...) installed.


To Jose: The message pops up after finished installing GAT and GAX and while trying to install a Guidance Package I developed on VS2005. I have a clean install of windows and VS2008 (thanks to the virtual machines), but installation doesn't work.

I just installed the GAXPatch and was able to create a new GP. After building and registering it (successfully) and starting a new VS2008 instance the Guidance Package entry from "New Project.." was gone.

After running the GAXPatch again, the entry reappeared and I was able to create a project from my previously registered package... I won't test it right now, but I would bet the entry is gone after registering a new GP..

I think its a shame how badly this stuff works. Its a great idea, but what's the point of writing a new GP if you can never be sure if it works or messes up the clients VS installation?!

Hi perezscott,

You have installed GAX for 2005, try uninstalling it then install again, Note the installer ask in one of the steps in which version of Visual Studio you want to install it (it's a two radio buttons in on of the screens).

After renaming the section /Software/Microsoft/VisualStudio/8.0 to "8.0.old" I was able to run the GAXTroubleshooter, this is what it says:

Okay, so I investigated further (I need this stuff to run!):

I tested it on a few additional virtual machines, but the installation of my Guidance Package doesn't work on any of these.

The problem, that the GP project type "Guidance Package" disappears after registering such a project, remains. When I use the GAXpatch it visible again, although there is only one line commented out:

Let me summarize the details to check we're on the same page about your problem:

1) you've sucessfully installed GAX (no errors)

2) you've successfully installed GAT (no errors)

You're now trying to install a Guidance Package (is it a p&p factory? one created by you?) from an MSI and it's failing.

If you're installing a MSI created with the latest GAX/GAT (which will install only to VS2005 or VS2008 on the same box, but not both) you need to make sure that you're installing it into a box were GAX is installed against the same VS version that you used to build the MSI, in other words, GAT will at build-time specify if the MSI should use the 8.0 or 9.0 registry hive depending onto which one was it installed.

Does this help? If we're not on the same page, please let me know more details in order to better understand the issue.

Yes, GAX & GAT are installed without errors.

I try to install a self made GP.

I did indeed built and wrote this Guidance Package under VS2005. But I did rebuild it with VS2008. This rebuilt package is what I tried to install.

(Side question: will I always have to build two packages for VS2005/08?)

It seems that GAT uses the 8.0 hive in my case. But I don't know why this happens even on a fresh windows installation which has only VS2008, GAT, GAX installed.

How can I explicitly build the Guidance Package for VS2008?
