Installing GAX for VS2008 RTM breaks project creation

I am having the same problem that was postedthe earlier thread:

http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2189982&SiteID=1

After installing GAX for VS2008 RTM I can no longer create any new projects. The fix suggested in the above thread of removing an entry in my devenv.config file does not work. However I can uninstall GAX and the problem goes away.

Can there be something else that could be causing this?

Does the GAX work for VS2008 RTM?

Here is a little more detail about my enviroment in cause this helps.

1. Running Vista Ultimate (32bit)

2. VS2008 RTM (Never installed any beta versions) side-by-side with VS2005

3. Was able to uninstall WCSF, GAT, GAX.

4. Installed GAX July 2007 with no issues.

Any advice at this point would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jeremy,

Do you have a devenv.config file and if so could you please post its contents here? We've seen a similar issue before (in the thread you referenced) so it would be good to start the diagnostics by circling down any potential assembly versioning conflicts. If you don't have such a file, can you run fusion log viewer and check if there are assemblies that are failing to load? (probably because of a version mismatch).

thanks,
-Victor.

Hi Victor,

Thanks for getting back with me.

I found thecuase of my problem and was able to fix it but I have to say it was a very strange problem. The root of it was how I edited the devenv.config. When I first made an edit to the file to remove the redirect of the TemplateWizardInterface I used an old version of UltraEdit to make the change. It didsave the file, but I later found out that it some how created a ghost or shadow copy of the file. I deleted the file from Windows Explorer, but I could still see and open the file from UltraEdit. So after I deleted the file from the Open Dialog in UltraEdit, restored the backup of devenv.config and changed it with NotePad (running as Administrator) was I able to get it to work.

Thanks Again.

Jeremy
