GAX Feb 2008 release -- installation on Vista for VS2005 suceeded but no Guidance Automation Mgr, etc.

I am not seeing the Guidance Automation Manager on VS2005 Tools->Guidance Automation Manager as described in the manual.

I am running Vista SP1. I downloaded the latest GAX - Feb 2008(http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=df79c099-4753-4a59-91e3-5020d9714e4e&DisplayLang=en) and then installed the GAT for VS2005. When I attempt to repair the GAX it complains that I do not have Visual Studio installed. My suspicions are that it is referring to VS2008. Also, I was unable to UNINSTALL it. I had to resort to Register removal.

Any advice here. Need more details.

OS: Vista SP1
VS: VS2005 Software Tester

then please post the output.

It will provide us more information about what exactly is happening

Second round ... after looking at the dump I noticed it was not finding the RecipeFramework.xml. In c:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Recipe Framework I had a RecipeFramework8.0.xml. I made a copy of it and renamed the old one toRecipeFramework.xml. Noe re-running the gax-dump I have the following ... Now it looks like their is a registry value not found...RecipeManagerPackage. Also, I appear to be missingVisualStudioUI.dll. Looks like the treasure hunt is still on. Glad someone wrote this gax-dump tool :-)

Third round....

I perform a repair of GAX and then "devenv /setup" ... I can now see the "Guidance Packages" under the "New Project" .... However, I don't know the impact of the VisualStudioUI.dll Warning in the previous post ... perhaps, someone can edify me on this. Making Progress :-)

Recap...

So, apparently thec:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Recipe Framework\RecipeFramework8.0.xml renamed toRecipeFramework.xml got things moving. You might want to look further in the msi package.

Anyway, thanks Josie for suggesting the down load of the Gax dumper... It has been a BIG help. But, I still have unresolved issues (VisualStudioUI.dll )

glad to hear that and we wrote that tool (clarius) ;)

regarding the *warning* with the VisualStudioUI.dll assembly, please ignore it, that's why the tool is trying to get the assembly manifest information for all Microsoft.Practices.* assemblies in order to know its version, culture, etc. but in that particular case is an unmanaged dll. So you won't have any issue with that.
