Anyone else getting endlessly repeated requests from VB 2005 Express to register? I've registered 4 times so far, and still the balloon keeps popping up in the system tray to remind me to do so.
I installed from the .img CD download, and there's no option anywhere to enter a reg code. Does someone know of a registry fix that will turn this off? |

Hello,
I worked on the registration feature in Express, so I can tell you something about it. It is by design that there is no registration dialog if you install through a .img because that scenario is primarily for people who don't have Internet access (we call this optional registration). The registration dialog is only there when you install through the web to ensure you complete registration and receive a registration key (we call this mandatory registration).
For optional registration, Visual Studio has no way of knowing you actually registered or not. We will show the reminder three times at the most and they are shown at the start of the Visual Studio sessions. If this is really bothering you, you can just restart Visual Studio until it goes away.
Thanks. |

I also installed from an .img CD and have not seen the popup ballons. I however am unable to register the product, the web page never loads....unable to display.
Is there an alternate link to register the product VB 2005 Express?
FYI - I'm behind a corporate firewall....if this matters. |

The registration is fine when I installed it directly from the website. However, at home, I used the IMG file. When I clicked Help>Register, I am pointed directly to the registration site. I haven't seen the usual textbox where I had to type in the registration code. Now, it's still reminding me to register. By the way, the registration site it pointed to also never printed out a registration code. Help please. -Ver |

Thanks for that. I thought I'd found that by setting the option to prevent the "Home page" at the start of VB, I'd got rid of the balloon. But maybe it was just because I'd been through the process 3 times.

Hmm, I have the same problem. However, I don't quite understand what do you mean by "For optional registration, Visual Studio has no way of knowing you actually registered or not. " If I enter a registration code shouldn't that be enough?
I have gone through the registration process and entered the code when prompted. All was OK for a while but now my C++ installation is threatening me to stop working in 5 days. Now the interesting part is that I only get the registration complaint if I run VC++ as a regular user (member of Users only). If I run it as a member of Administrators then I do not get the tray icon.

Thank you for looking in on the forum. You and your team appear to have ignored users like myself who found it easier manually download the software and create an .img file for installation later on more than one machine. There is no way of properly registering the software via this route at the present time. Although the MSDN site thanks me for registering there is no reply email.
As stated elsewhere on here, I would like to avail myself of the bundle of goodies which accompany registration, including the eBooks and icons. Can you provide a workaround whereby my installation of Visual express Studio suite can be properly activated?

I downloaded from the site and ran into quite a few problems with using a hotmail account for registration. I think it was down to my ISP. But when I used my Outlook account the registration address came straight through, and the process worked just fine. I think it may have something to do with how yout ISP handles thrid party cookies.
Eitherways folks, I think we should all say a big thanks to Microsoft for <b>giving</b> us these wonderful, and as far as I can tell, complete, products; regardless of freebies. God, you want the moon on a stick sometimes, you really do!
Have fun peeps! |

me: And, we really do, bob, we really do!

me: Well, if the moon is promised to me on a stick, then yeah, I want it. If it weren't promised, then I'd be okay with only getting the moonand not the stick. A promise is a promise - not part of a promise.

me: I do plan on it, bob, I really do! So, I hope thatmy awesome, free Express Editions don't start telling me they're going to shut off in 5 days just when I'm really getting into the fun! |

In this case, Nick, it appears that you installed your Express Edition while logged in as Adminstrator. A registration is applicable to a particular user. So... you will need to repeat the registration process for each user that will be accessing the Express Edition. If you've got 5 users, then you'll need to repeat the process for each one of the 5 - logged in as each one. (For example, if you've got a user named user1, say, log in as user1 and re-register. Then, log in as user2 and re-register that user, and so on.)
That should fix it.
Now, for us'ns who installed from the .img files, I found that we don't need to register. According to item number 7 on the Registration FAQ, "The installation CD you create will then allow you to install an Express Edition ..., and that Express Edition will not require a registration key for continued usage." |

I take it from the sarcasm clueles that you do not experience the little whoops of joy whenever you conquer the seemingly inconquerable? My neighbours think I'm a depraved individual because of the amount of whooping I do.
Have fun |

Unlike the other folks on the site, I DID load my copy of Visual Basic 2005 Express from the web. And, I registered the software with Microsoft. Dutifully, Microsoft has responded with a registration key. The unfortunate problem is that when I cut-and-paste the registration key I received from Microsoft into the appropriate txet box, I get an error message indicating that "the registration Key is not valid". Any ideas on how to fix this problem? |

I attempted several times to download by the normal method, but the dialog with the statement that it was loading components and this would "take a minute or two" would not finish. The progress bar made it about 80% of the way and then all disk activity stopped. No error or anything else.
I finally downloaded the .img file and ISOBuster and installed that way. I did not consider this *my* option. When the balloon came up I went to the site and registered. I now have four "Thank you for registering" emails from Mark Jewett. None of these contained a registration key -- just links to a variety of places to go get free stuff.
By the way, when I downloaded the "mandatory registration" way, there were 39 components. In the .img there were 44. Maybe that is why the normal way didn't work -- it wasn't all there.
I *really* would have prefered to install and register normally -- and I definitely would have done so if it had been possible.
I will reboot again and see if I get the balloon again. It must be at least three times by now.

I have also recieved several requests. I downloded direct from Microsoft.
It would be nice if Microsoft would advise what fix is available on the Start Page of the System, instead of repeating all the old data. |

Like Maturin, I would like to register so I can have access to the Benefits Portal. The software was loaded by ISO on a machine with no web access. How do I register an express edition from a machine on which it is not installed? PS I do not need a registration key. |
