I have been using Visual Interdev 6 for several years to develop HTML and ASP pages. Today, on starting Visual Interdev, I selected "Open a New HTML Page" from the dialogue. I received an error message "The parameter is incorrect". I then clicked on "Help/About" on the Visual Interdev menu bar and got the same error message. I can successfully open new ASP and Text pages.
Anyone have any ideas? - Edited byVegasMikey Wednesday, September 16, 2009 1:59 AMcorrected error message

I just started having the same problem! In addition, when I right-click on a .htm or .asp file and select "Edit with Visual Studio" it opens displaying an empty gray box for the Design tab ( http://www.danhite.com/InterdevBug.jpg). If I click the Source or Quick View tabs I get the following crash: http://www.danhite.com/InterdevCrash.JPG. Given that we both just started getting this error I suspect it was caused by a recent Microsoft Update. I'm on XP Media Center Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3. UPDATE: I just uninstalled KB956844 and Visual Interndev is back to working correctly. How do we report to Microsoft that KB956844 ( http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=956844) breaks Visual Interdev? - Marked As Answer byVegasMikey Saturday, September 19, 2009 12:41 AM

Thank you DHite. I found I can open HTML files (existing and new) provided I don't use Design View. I modified my options (Tools/Options/HTML) to open HTML files in Source mode rather than Design mode, as the default. This gives me a temporary workaround. I have a deadline to meet so I can't pursue the issue further at this time, but I will uninstall KB956844 soon.
I am running XP Professional 2002 SP 3.
I know that if I go to Windows Update/Review Update History, in IE, there is a link to "Report a Problem", so perhaps you want to try that. Please let me know if you report the problem successfully.
Thanks again,
Mike. - Edited byVegasMikey Friday, September 18, 2009 5:53 PMAdded OS.

Well, since I uninstalled KB956844 it doesn't show up in Review Update History so I can't select it to report it. |

Hi DHite,
I called Microsoft XP General Assist Support 1-800-936-5700.
They referred me to Developer Support 1-800-936-5800 as the problem is with Visual Studio rather than the security update?!?!?!?.
Developer Support told me they would charge me for reporting the bug on the weekend, but I could report it for free during normal business hours on Monday at 1-800-936-4900.
I told them I don't want support, I just want to report the bug, but apparently they can only deal with bugs for freeMon-Fri 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
It only took me one and a half hours on the phone and chat windows and sharing my PC with them, to obtain this valuable information!!!!
Despite this, I will call on Monday morning if I have a couple of hours to spare.

Hello, Has someone reported this to Microsoft and is there a resolution other than removing KB 956844? We have similar problem with Interdev after installing KB956844, then the problem clears when the KB is removed.
Thank you, Richard |

I called Microsoft again today (Tuesday). They connected me with 7 different people in 3 departments none of whom could help. I have now spent a total of 4 hours on the phone with Microsoft support. I was finally told that the bug must be reported to Microsoft by snail-mail and they gave me a mailing address. I have mailed a letter.

I find it hard to believe that this is standard operating procedure for bug reporting.
Feel free to call the support numbers 800-936-5700, 800-936-5800 and 800-936-4900. You may have more success than I did.

Hello - I have opened a case with Microsft Premier Support for this issue. I'll update after I know something.

Thank you VegasMikey, your workaround has enabled me to use interdev again, especially as I don't use the design option anyway.
I have been having the same problem as the rest of you. It appears to be as a result of an xp auto update somewhere between the 9th and 15th of september 2009.
I have emailed MS a couple of times and sent many error reports with no success whatsoever - so what's the point? MS have effectively downloaded a virus to my PC but they don't seem to give a hoot.
thanks
